Lions must be among the most incredibly animals. They are symbolic of power, majesty and strength. They are said to be the King of the beasts. There is a very good reason for this. When you come across and see a lion, you realize just how much power they have. They are one solid muscular, hunting machine. There are a few legendary stories of men killing lions with their bare hands and a knife. Most who have achieved this, walked away severely injured, most never made it to tell the tale. One on one, a lion is an almost unbeatable match. Have you ever felt a cat’s tongue? It has these little barbs on it that give you that rough feeling. Well, while I was in some reserve in Northern Namibia, one of the old rangers there told me about a colleague who had had a breakdown and slept next to his vehicle for the night. This particular colleague woke up with something licking him. He soon realized that it was a lioness. So he just lay dead still not wanting to scare her. Fortunately she left him alone, but the next day he realized that where she had licked him he had no more hair. He sheepishly went to work the next day, with this bald spot on his head where this lioness had licked him. That’s crazy! I don’t know why the lioness didn’t bite him, but I could well believe the story. I’ve felt a lion’s tongue (at a research facility) and it is incredibly sharp!
While on the subject of lions, I think that we should offer some tips on taking good lion pics. They are not too hard to take, as lions are very confident animals. You can stay within your vehicle and often lions will come right up to your door. This is the perfect opportunity for some good close-up lion pics. Lions are very sociable animals and getting pics of these interactions can be very rewarding. A good lion pic, in some manner captivates the majesty of this animal. My favourite lion pics are those close up pics of a black mane male lion. The pics where you can see into the amber eyes, and feel that cold stare. Those are my absolute favourite lion pics.
The best time to take good lion pics is in the early morning or in the late evening. This is when they are often on the move. Lions sleep 16 hours a day, and taking a pic of a sleeping lion is not that inspiring. There are far better lion pics to be taken in the morning or evening. The best lion pics are when the lions are hunting. If you can capture that ferocious part of a lion on camera you will have a winner of a picture.
